Printwise 3D printing field guide

FDM / FFF printing, made practical

Get reliable prints,
one layer at a time.

A pocket reference for choosing filaments, dialing in a printer, and solving the issues that show up on the build plate.

Before every print

The five-minute setup

Most “printer problems” are material, first-layer, or mechanical-prep problems. Start here before changing twenty slicer settings.

Pick the right filament

Temperatures are sensible starting ranges, not absolutes. Every brand, color, hotend, and enclosure can shift the ideal setting.

Start with the job, not the color.
PLA makes learning easy. PETG is a practical next step for durable parts. Materials such as ABS, ASA, Nylon, and PC need more thermal control.

      Pro tip

      Repeatable quality

      Dial in your printer

Change one variable at a time and save the result. These tests reveal more than random profile adjustments.

A collection of useful 3D printer calibration test parts on a build plate

Keep a small set of repeatable calibration models: a temperature tower, a single-wall cube, a retraction tower, and a corner test. Label each result with material, date, and settings.

      01

      Temperature tower

Print the same small features across 5 °C steps. Choose the coolest segment with clean layers and strong bridging.

      Tests: stringing, layer bonding, overhangs
      02

      Flow / extrusion multiplier

Use a single-wall cube. Measure wall thickness with calipers and adjust flow in small 1–2% moves.

      Tests: wall accuracy, surface quality
      03

      Retraction test

Use a multi-tower test after temperature. Start low, then increase distance or speed only until strings disappear.

      Tests: travel strings, blobs, jams
      04

      Pressure advance

Calibrate the printer’s pressure or linear advance feature to sharpen corners and stabilize line width.

      Tests: corner bulges, seams, dimension

      Filament spool calculator

Estimate how much printable length remains from a weighed spool. Weights are approximate; the empty spool itself must be excluded.

      Estimated material

      165 m

500 g of PLA at 1.75 mm diameter

Quick reminder Weigh your empty spool once, write its tare weight on the rim, then subtract it every time.
